A recent fire incident caused by an appliance malfunction resulted in significant damage to this Hastings seafront property. The entire kitchen was badly affected, and thick black smoke spread throughout the property, contaminating nearby walls, ceilings, and carpets. The intense heat even caused cracking to the glass panels at the kitchen entrance and shattered a double-glazed window at the rear.
Thankfully, the Fire Service responded quickly and contained the situation before it developed into a full-scale blaze that could have impacted the entire block.
Due to the extent of the damage, the property was deemed uninhabitable, and the tenant had to stay in a hotel while works were carried out. We began with a full-scale clearance, removing all damaged materials including carpets, underlay, and kitchen fittings.
Next, we tackled the smoke-damaged surfaces. Using TSP degreaser, we thoroughly cleaned all affected walls and ceilings to remove soot, grease, and loose particles, followed by vacuuming to ensure no residue remained. Once cleaned, we applied a specialist odour-killing, stain-blocking primer to every affected surface to seal in any remaining smoke staining and eliminate lingering odours.
Repairs were then made to damaged walls, electrical wiring, and broken glazing. The redecoration process included:
Application of odour-blocking stain primer
Additional primer coat
Base and top coats of emulsion
After reinstating a like-for-like but more modern kitchen, we upgraded the electrics, addressed the plumbing, and installed new kitchen flooring. With all fixtures refitted and walls freshly painted, we laid new carpets throughout to fully remove any trace of smoke smell and restore a fresh, welcoming interior.
Additional works were carried out behind the scenes to ensure the long-term safety and habitability of the property, providing peace of mind for the current and future tenants.
